What causes the musty smell

The odor is the byproduct of mold, mildew, and bacteria growing on the wet internal surfaces of your indoor unit. Every time the system cools, moisture condenses on the evaporator coil. Dust and organic debris settle onto that damp coil and blower wheel, and in our humid climate, colonies establish quickly. When the fan starts, it pushes air across all of that growth and carries the smell — and the spores — into your home.
